Overview
The speaker will provide a brief overview about the history of the Church in China, with focus on Matteo Ricci (as 2010 marks the 400th year of his death), and then discuss anecdotes about the lives of some modern Catholics in different regions of China, stories of conversion, and opportunities for evangelization.

Biography

John Smagula, J.D., M.S., is a leading expert in developing and teaching legal education programs for Chinese government officials and commercial lawyers.

Since 2003, he has worked as Director of Asian Programs at Temple University School of Law, where he recruits, raises funds, and teaches for Temple’s Master of Laws (LL.M.), judicial education, and legislative drafting programs in China. He has delivered lectures on U.S. law and legal education at nearly 40 Chinese government agencies and law schools, has written articles and been quoted in the media about the rule of law in China, and has presented at U.S. conferences on China-related issues. He is proficient in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, and he regularly interprets at official meetings.

Prior to his work with Temple, John taught at law schools in geographically diverse locations in China, worked in the corporate law practice of the New York and Hong Kong offices of Paul Weiss, and worked with the law firm of Totti & Rodriguez Diaz in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He earned his B.A. in International Relations in 1992 from Pomona College, J.D. in 1995 from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, and M.S. in Education (with focus on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in 2007 from Temple University.

He is an active member of Holy Redeemer Church in Philadelphia's Chinatown, a frequent participant in Church activities on his regular visits to China, and a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher.
