The Community Service Corps (CSC) is a unique organization in the United States. Housed in the archdiocesan and private high schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, CSC provides opportunities for high school teens to put their faith into action through service. It is an extra curricular activity which requires the teens’ most precious commodity- their time. After school and on weekends, young people gather to serve in their schools, parishes and local communities. Through CSC young people experience a deepening of their faith and a realization that the call to serve is not for a privileged few, but for everyone.
History
Conceived in a period of great social concern in 1965, the main thrust of CSC was to give young people a vehicle by which they could serve their neighbor in ways appropriate to age and within context of the Church. The CSC had humble beginnings. A group of concerned citizens, including some faculty members at Cardinal Dougherty High School, engendered enthusiasm for and involved the students in other-oriented activities. The movement “caught on” and we see today these first beginnings multiplied a hundred fold.

Lord,
Thank you for the great gifts of this world, especially for the gift of each other.
As we grow in community through the love for one another,
give us the strength to accept the challenge of service
Help us to realize the needs of the disenfranchised
and deepen our commitment to meet those needs.
Never let us become preoccupied with our human accomplishments
but teach us to know that all things come from you.
Amen.
