In 1996, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) published a national plan for ministry with young adults titled: Sons and Daughter of the Light: A Pastoral Plan for Ministry with Young Adults. According to this plan, a "young adult" is a person in their "late teens, twenties, and thirties; single, married, divorced, or widowed; and with or without children."

The Office for Youth and Young Adults strives to minister and assist parishes in ministering to this population. Therefore the Office for Youth and Young Adults does not sponsor "singles groups" or opportunities specifically for those outside the young adult age range.
